How to read auction sheet condition grades
What the letter and numeric grades mean and what to check on the auction sheet.
The auction sheet is the main document describing a motorcycle''s condition. Being able to read it protects you from unpleasant surprises.
The overall grade
Each motorcycle gets an overall grade - letter or numeric depending on the venue. Higher values mean better condition; lower ones mean visible wear, defects, or repair marks. A non-standard status, such as restoration after damage, may be flagged separately.
The detail map
Beyond the overall grade, the sheet notes scratches, dents, corrosion, tyre condition, and mileage. A body diagram with coded damage marks is often included.
What to look for
- How mileage matches the age and overall condition.
- Marks about replaced parts or signs of repainting.
- Inspector comments - they add nuance the grade alone does not show.
We always explain a specific lot''s grade in plain terms before you decide.
